Founded in 2002, CSI’s mission is to catalyze community, government, and other institutions to dismantle structural racial inequity and create equitable outcomes for all. We craft and apply strategies and tools to transform our nation’s policies, practices, and institutions, in order to achieve racial equity.

Whether or not we thrive as individuals is determined by how our society is structured.

Local government decides whether or not a new bus line will connect you to the thriving downtown area. Banks decide whether or not to offer you a loan to purchase a new home. Businesses decide whether or not to open a new location in your neighborhood.

Decisions like these structure the world in which we live and determine what opportunities and challenges we face. These interactions help or hinder whether we have decent housing, quality health care, and good schools, among other opportunities—and too often, the collective impact of these decisions, both past and present, comes at the expense of communities of color.

We call this phenomenon structural racial inequity, and it has prevented us from achieving a truly inclusive democracy in America.
